okay so max brenner is this chain restaurant where the theme is chocolate "chocolate by the bald man". i'm deducing the actual max brenner is bald. we're talking the most decedent 10-page chocolate dessert menu and bleeding over onto the actual menu are waffle fries dusted with cocoa powder and hot wings offered up with chocolate blue cheese dipping sauce. count me in! and it's one block from our philadelphia apartment. yikes.

on your way out of the restaurant, you can stop by their shop and pick up individual chocolates (my favorite: the one with crushed cornflakes and black pepper) as well as spa products. thus, i'm addicted to their shower milk. it contains cocoa butter, 'natch, as well as dark honey, molasses, and wild flowers. the scent? VANILLA BOURBON. your shower becomes a heavenly place.

this movie kicks ass. literally. and figuratively. and in every other way. haywire's heroine (think a female jason bourne) is played by retired mixed martial arts champion gina carano. and she's supported by a bunch of very talented male actors: channing tatum, ewan mcgregor, michael douglas, antonio bandanas, michael angarano, michael paxton, and (my favorite new actor) michael (f)assbender. and carano manages to kick all their asses in one way or another. it's a non-stop thrill ride by director stephen soderbergh that grabbed me from the opening frame and never let loose. i seriously hope they're working on a sequel.

we went to see this film last night. i'm a fan of the janet evanovich novels. it's a series: "one for the money', "two for the show", "three to get deadly", etc. i think she's up to number seventeen or so now. they're what you call "cozy mysteries". fluffy. anyhow, this one stars katherine hiegel. i think she's pretty and perky and makes fun rom-com films. why does half of america profess to hate her? jealousy? 'cuz she's fluffy? and makes a gazillion dollars? the film is cute, has no substance, wastes debbie reynolds horribly, and is a fine way to spend two hours during which you have nothing else to do. if they move on to a sequel, they need to get a new director.

i love have 73 different channels of HBO. you can find practically any movie you want. and when a movie airs, it seems to air a thousand times over a 2 or 3 day period. which explains why i've watched "life as we know it" a dozen or so times in the last week. katherine heigl and josh duhamel as two not-quite-mature humans who inherit the orphan child of their best friends. it's standard rom-com stuff (with a delicious supporting turn by melissa mccarthy who is just wonderful in EVERYthing). but heigl and duhamel are just so attractive and made-for-each-other from the first frame of the film, i'm a sucker for it every time.

spent a rainy, dreary afternoon at the ritz cinema seeing a quiet, moving film - A SEPARATION. from iran, it seems this film has a lock on winning this year's oscar for best foreign language film. it has won over 25 such honors already. it has a 99% positive review rating on rotten tomatoes. a modern film about modern iran, it will come as a surprise to any who envisions that country as a place filled with people who ride camels, have harems, and are clamoring for a nuclear weapon.

this tale is an ordinary tale about ordinary, human people who are all trying to live a good life, to do the right thing. the story unfolds in a simple, direct way into a complex interweaving of human lives that is complex, difficult, and unnerving. it's full of wonderful performances from principal actors ranging from about 6 to about 80. and the storytelling is marvelous (it's also nominated for a Best Original Screenplay oscar). if you thought you wouldn't particularly get "into" an iranian film, think differently. this one will move you.

yesterday i saw the wednesday matinee of kenneth lin's FALLOW, a world premiere at people's light and theatre company. as a Barrymore voter, i'm not supposed to say publicly what i think about the plays i'm judging, but i've decided to post my theatre-going here. to encourage everyone to see theatre. especially new plays and emerging playwrights. they so need our love and support.

FALLOW is described as: "Upon discovering a cache of unsent letters, Elizabeth Hayes rushes to rural California on a quest to meet the men who murdered her son, Aaron, a young man who abandoned his Ivy-League pedigree to work as a beekeeper and migrant farm worker. A haunting and surprising drama about the love between a mother and son, and their travels through some nearly invisible parts of our country." it runs through february 5th.

72 movies in 2011

last year i sat down in a darkened movie theatre and saw 72 films. i'm kinda amazed myself. we don't do netflix and i don't watch screeners. i like the good old fashioned move experience. complete with popcorn, when i'm feeling so inclined. and preferably with my best date, antonio, beside me (although he cant do quite as many as i can). so now i'm busy compiling my "Top 10 Films of 2011" list. i'm such a geek: this will be the 20th year anniversary of my list. i did it first with the 'top films of 1992'. wow. again, i just amazed myself. i always give myself until the Oscar nominations are released, just so i have time to catch all the wonderful "please consider this for academy awards" films that are released at christmastime. i think i've now seen all the ones i want of this year's contenders. and the oscar nominations will be announced on tuesday. so get ready for my list to be posted here on tuesday. i know you're all atingle, but you only have to wait 3 more days.

a video is making its way 'round the net featuring some children of the corn girl urging america to boycott girl scout cookies. as a professed girl scout (albeit one without any emotion, feeling, or any other human characteristics), this chick identified only as "Taylor" of ventura, california, is all up in arms (again, in her monotone, robotic way) that the girl scouts of colorado have allowed a 7-year-old boy named bobby montoya to join. bobby is the cutest kid whose mom says he like to dress up like a girl, says he's a girl, and his lifelong dream was to join the girl scouts and sell thin mints door-to-door. bobby is the actual HUMAN BEING in the second photo. so taylor is all upset that bobby (a BOY and possibly even worse yet a TRANSGENDERED PERSON) has been allowed to infiltrate the girl scout ranks. PUH-LEASE, girl scouts is a group where little kids get together for an hour once a week and make popsicle stick birdhouses. they don't gather round for cervical cancer examinations. what's the harm if bobby wants to sell some thin mints? which gets me back to the problem with "taylor". she says america should BOYCOT girl scout cookies and put the whole enterprise out of business. WHAT? back away from my thin mints you evil, transgender-averse robot girl. or this could get nasty.

last night's dinner

after dinner last night I got all wrapped up in that FABulous show "wipeout" - I LoVE it! - and forgot to food blog. Antonio's in nyc so my friend Kathy joined me to Nosh it up at home in Philly. we had a spinach salad with strawberries and aged balsamic vinaigrette, paella with lobster and chorizo (caliente!) and a loverly fruit tart for dessert. it was all amazing.

some days i'm such a 12-year-old girl. okay, most days. but can you believe they have lip smackers flavored like girl scout cookies?! a minute on your lips and no time on your hips. of course that won't stop me from buying the real thing, but i cannot wait to try these lip balms. i had to order one in every flavor. they're, like, a buck each. trefoil, tagalong, thin mint, samoas, peanut butter patties. yummmmmm!

when i go to the U.K. next month, i wanna get my hands on some Hunky Dory potato chips. well, Hunky Dory "crisps". mostly 'cuz i love their advertising featuring the Gaelic Women's Rugby team. apparently to play ladies' rugby in ireland, you have to have mondo breast implants and be a big 'ho. or a lezzie. there are, however, 82 PRUDES in the U.K. who called in to complain about the ads. sad.

new york is getting a FAB-ulous new hotel for the gays called The Out. in what some journalists are calling a "glorified bathouse - with bedrooms" will be a hot, young, all-male Latino staff aged 18-24. Madonna would approve. too bad she's not a gay man. but then again... there will also be "discount" rooms where sexxxxy singles can room together. 5 bunks to a room with a communal shower. sounds sudsy. also, guests will be able to sign up for the Out Hotel app. which sounds like some sort of in-house Grindr to allow instant hook-ups for sessy times amongst the patrons. i'm not sure if this all sounds cutting edge or totally cheesy or just down right "i need to take a shower after checking out". regardless, recent graduates from marcus bachmann's midwestern clinic are already booking their stays, i'm sure.
