sex with a stranger

i love new plays.  tonight at trafalgar studios:  "sex with a stranger" by stefan golaszewski.  it's a fascinating, enthralling look at the lives of three people over a 24-hour period.  it's told in dozens of scenes ranging from 5 or 6 minutes to those of only 5-10 seconds and whips backward and forward in time, leaving you to piece the entire story together on your own.

the outstanding cast is led by russell tovey, famous for the stage and film versions of "the history boys" as well as the bbc series "being human".  i admire tovey so much as a person for being one of the few serious actors who is openly gay.  and the fact that he's probably more convincing playing a straight guy (as he does here) than he would be playing gay.  proof that it CAN be done, hollywood.   he's ably supported by jaime winstone and naomi sheldon.

as a side note, this was in a smallish theatre, seating around 100 people.  we were all right in the middle of the story (only 4 rows, in three-quarters staging).  i was in the front row, stage level, and only 3 feet away from Tovey has he changed clothes several times and had "sex with a stranger" (of course).  and this british audience was AMAZING.  not only did no one's phone go off (which in nyc would be an achievement in itself), but i don't think any member of this audience made a single sound during the entire performance.  it seemed no one dared to breathe.  i want to hire them to see every theater production with me from this point forward.
